Polyaniline - an anticorrosion protector for stainless steel in sulfuric acid
Sulfuric acid is used in many industries and industrial processes. Corrosion problems occur in plants for making the acid and also in consumer applications. Polyaniline (PANI) is one of the most intensively investigated of the electronically conductive polymers. The aim of this paper is to study the mechanism of the protection of PANI for stainless steel corrosion in sulfuric acid. The PANI-coated stainless steel samples have been studied using a wide variety of in- situ methods (electrochemical methods and scanning reference electrode technique (SRET)) and ex- situ methods (Auger spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy and uv-vis spectroscopy). These studies have shown that, in agreement with prior investigations of polyaniline-coated stainless steel, PANI passivates the underlying stainless steel surface. The mechanism by which PANI provides this interesting corrosion protection will be discussed.
