Osteocalcin, parathyroid hormone and calcium in postmenopausal women with non-insulin dependent diabetes
Serum osteocalcin levels has been found to be a specific biochemical parameter of bone formation. We measured serum levels of osteocalcin, PTH, total calcium and alkaline phosphatase in 26 women with NIDDM(19 postmenopausal, 7 with regular cycle) and a matched control group(n=30). Osteocalcin serum levels were significantly decreased in the NIDDM postmenopausal women, when compared to control subjects. Serum levels of PTH, total calcium and alkaline phosphatase and diabetic patients were not statistically different from the matched control group. Our data gives evidence of the osteocalcin deficiency and decreased bone formation in postmenopausal women with NIDDM.
