Assessment of organic pollution in the Jakuševec landfill (Croatia) by biomarker and chemical methods.
An assessment of xenobiotic organic pollutants in solid waste of the city of Zagreb was performed using chemical characterisation of individual compounds by gas chromatography/ mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and two biomarker methods. All extracts revealed a significant increase (5 to 16-fold) of the benzo(a)pyrene monooxygenase (BaPMO) activity in liver of the experimental carps. The BaPMO activity was positively correlated with the concentration of the total polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH). The examined extracts were weakly mutagenic in the Ames test only after a metabolic activation.
