Zagorje turkey – traditional croatian product for the European Union

Today, in the light of all-present tendency of a modern and urban man to reconnect to nature, it is especially important to understand the significance of the natural production of food. It is important to know who produces our food as well as where is it produced and how is it produced. All-present globalization in food production influences great insecurity and dependence on the production of food which is sometimes even thousands of kilometers away from us. The fact that we do not see how was our food produced, that we do not know where it was stored and how did it travel creates distrust in the quality of food. The taste of food is not important (which is the commonest criterion when choosing a particular foodstuff), but its healthiness and usefulness to our body. We have to be familiar with the region of production, biotechnology of production and refinement of the food as well as the people involved in it. Development of agricultural production, which assures viability and biological variety of the environment we live in, will increase life quality in the region. When discussing sustainable agriculture, under the phrase we consider agriculture which is economically, socially and above all ecologically acceptable to our community. If food production is developed by sustainable agriculture, then we influence the landscape (agriculture is the best and the cheapest steward), we assure permanence of biological diversity, we protect soil and water from pollution, which are byproducts of intensive and conventional agriculture. The Zagorje turkey represents an important part of the Croatian biological diversity and this is one of the reasons why we are obliged to protect it. It should not be valued only as an economy potential, but from the other aspects as well. The Zagorje turkey is a symbol of the Croatian Zagorje and its disappearance would cause us to lose a part of our history.
