Experimental investigation of tram track vibration
For the purpose of reducing tram traffic vibrations in the centre of the City of Zagreb (Croatia), field studies on two types of track constructions were conducted. The usual tram construction in Zagreb is a track on a continuous concrete base with discrete track fastening. During track reconstructions in 2006, a section of Horvacanska Street had been prepared for investigation of two types of track fasteners, discrete and continuous. The former type represents the typical track fastener, while the latter type was proposed to reduce vibrations. Considering that the tracks are situated in a distinct belt, with a 4.0 m axis distance, the vibration measurement point was placed between the tracks. In this manner, ground vibrations were taken at the same measurement point during the passage of a tram over one of the tested tracks. As the tracks on this segment are closed with a concrete and asphalt filling, several inspection openings were left to allow repetition of the track vibration measurements. This made it possible to monitor the behaviour of the track construction over time. The results obtained in this study served in decision-making concerning the type of construction to be used in constructing the track directly over an underground parking garage on one of the city’ s main squares.
