Violence and the Clergy in Medieval Croatia: The Violent Death of the Spalatin Archbishop Arnir (Rainerius) in 1180
In this article the authors examine the ecclesiastical and political work of Spalatin archbishop St. Arnir in the second half of the twelfth century with particular attention to his relationships with the pope Alexander III and the Byzantine emperor Manuel I. Comnenus. Following Pope's ecclesiastical policy at that time, Arnir's main task was to preserve and to corroborate the position and right of Spalatin Church, particularly cocerning the ecclesiastical land estates, which lead to his conflict with powerful Croatian noble kindred of Kačići. Since during that strugle Arnir was killed, soon after the creation of his cult as a saint was established in the region of Spalatin diocese. Therefore, the authors also examine the medieval hagiographic works connected to the creation of his cult.
