Damping properties of interpenetrating polymer networks based on poly(methyl methacrylate) and silsesquioxanes

New interpenetrating polymer networks based on poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and silsesquioxane-containing, organic-inorganic (hybrid) network were prepared by bulk polymerization. The inorganic (silsesquioxane) phase was generated from an organically modified silicon alkoxyde, 3- glycidyloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GLYMO) via sol- el chemistry. Poly(oxypropylene)diamine was used as an epoxy opening agent, as basic catalyst for GLYMO condensation and as PMMA crosslinking agent. The structure of prepared materials were studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). Based on the results of dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) the damping ability of prepared materials was estimated. The tangent of the loss angle (tan δ ) at the glass transition temperature and the temperature interval of effective damping (where tan δ >0.3) were used as the criteria of damping ability.
