Remaining Performance of Corroded Reinforced Concrete Elements
Numerous reinforced concrete structures are subjected to corrosion of reinforcement due to carbonation and chloride attack during the service life. Even though researches on corrosion of steel in concrete are widely performed, there is still an absence of a holistic approach to the influence of corrosion of reinforcement on the carrying capacity, serviceability and safety of reinforced concrete structures. In the part of the experimental research presented in this paper the corrosion parameters and the remaining mechanical properties of corroded reinforcement from concrete elements for different levels of corrosion were tested. Experimental results are showing a decrease of mechanical properties such as strength, ductility and stiffness of corroded reinforcing bars compared to non-corroded ones. Expressions for mechanical characteristics of corroded reinforcement are proposed as functions of the extent of reinforcement steel corrosion. The results, which were obtained during the research, are a good basis for more precise calculation of remaining capacity and serviceability of concrete elements with corroded reinforcement.
