Dietary and lifestyle habits of Croatian adolescents

Dietary habits are established in early life and can have a considerable effect on the health of individuals in the long-term. The adolescent phase is the time when most individuals acquire and consolidate attitudes and behavioral patterns that they carry through life and that are largely influenced by their family lifestyle and food habits. This is a period of research, increased responsibility ; it’ s oriented towards gaining life experience (e.g. social settings, cultural criteria), psychological and physiological traits, preferences, beliefs and expectations regarding food choices and healthy lifestyle practices. The aim of this study was to determine lifestyle and dietary habits of adolescents in Eastern Croatia. 444 adolescents from one high school, 236 male and 208 females, and 14-19 years of age participated in this study. All of the participants completed a questionnaire that was developed specifically for the purposes of this study. Using self-reported height and weight, BMI was calculated, with average of 22.3 for male and 20.4 for female adolescents. Larger part of participated adolescents lives in urban area (58.8%). We found that 27.3% of them already developed smoking habits and 64.2% drink alcohol occasionally. Shocking information was to find out that even 62.4% of adolescents do not have any kind of physical activity outside school program, which covers only about 1.5 hours of physical activity per week. 64.2% of adolescents think they have enough knowledge about healthy nutrition, and 58.8% of participated adolescents think their nutrition is average. 80.2% of adolescents have tree to five meals a day, eating breakfast and dinner regularly by 55.4% and 61.9% of adolescents, respectively. Most abundant food groups are meat and meat products (44.6%), followed by milk and dairy products (20.1%) and cereals and products (19.8%). Taking all the results we can conclude that the dietary habits of adolescents as well as their life habits definitely need changes, especially regarding smoking habits, alcohol use and physical activity.
