Direct radionuclide cystography – a method overview

Vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) is defined as abnormal, retrograde flow of urine from the bladder up the ureter and into the collecting system of the kidneys. In most cases, it occurs secondary to an inborn anatomic or functional disorder of the vesicoureteric junction. Unrecognized VUR is an important cause of urinary tract infections with concomitant renal scarring, impaired renal growth and eventual reflux nephropathy. End-stage renal failure represents the most serious long-term consequence of uncorrected reflux nephropathy. Direct radionuclide cystography (DRC) is a diagnostic imaging procedure that requires catheterization of the urinary bladder and instillation of the radiopharmaceutical (99m Tc-pertechnetate in saline) into the bladder in order to prove the existence of VUR during the filling, maximum distension and the voiding phase. The purpose of the present work is an illustrated overview of the position of DRC method in diagnostic examination. For that purpose, patient records were reviewed and statistically summarized for year 2008, encompassing necessary equipment, patient management, acquisition procedures and interventions in DRC. The paper points out the importance of nuclear medicine technologist in correct preparation and execution of DRC, including prevention of radiological contamination of patients, working area and personnel
