Aphasia - What's that???
Our survey comprised 177 students (166 female, 11 male, mean ages 22 year) from different Faculties of University of Zagreb. Forth year students from Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Dental Medicine, Faculty of Social Work, Faculty of Economics and Business, Faculty of Philosophy participated in this survey. In our institution, Faculty of Education and Rehabilitation Sciences, we tested students on first and fourth year from all 3 courses: Speech Pathology, Social Pedagogic and Rehabilitation. Using a translation of the questionnaire “ The Public Awareness of Aphasia” (Code, C. et al. 2001) we want to exam students’ recognition of term aphasia and their knowledge about aphasia. Comparing our results with results obtained from similar studies in England, USA, Australia, Norway and Croatia (Code, C. et al., 2001., Simmons-Mackie, N. et al., 2002., Haaland-Johansen, L., 2003., Leko, A. & Prizl Jakovac, T., 2005) was also one of our goals. Our results showed that 20% of respondents didn’ t hear of aphasia, and 44% of them were students of Economics and Business (only one student of Economy heard of aphasia), 20% were Students of Social Pedagogic, 17% students of Philosophy, 14% were students of Social Work and 5% of them were students of Rehabilitation (first year). A large percentage (43%) knows or has known someone who had communication or speech problems. Even 76% of students are connecting aphasia with speech problems, and 40% with communication problems. Concerning cause of aphasia, 75% presume that brain damage cause aphasia, 11 % think that emotional problems are cause of aphasia, 3% said that impaired intelligence cause aphasia, even 18% connecting “ mental” problems with aphasia, and 1% answer “ Don’ t know” . The most students (51%) had heard of aphasia during their studying, through the media 23% of students had heard about this problem. On the question about doing something to help person with aphasia 25% of students hadn’ t answer anything, 3% think that nothing could be done, and 2% don’ t know if anything could be done for people with aphasia. Results showing that the most examinees had heard of aphasia during their studying, what is not surprising, since they are student of medical and socio-humanistic sciences. Awareness through media indicate the bigger popularization of aphasia, rehabilitation possibilities (when, where, how) and social care about people with aphasia.
