Application of GIS in Public Transport of the Neretva Region

Application of geographic information system has a longtime tradition in developed countries. Starting from there it has been distributed to other countries. GIS presents one of the main factors in a rational decision-making and effective management of traffic resources. At the present, among wide general users of public transport in Republic Croatia there is still no conscience about the importance and possiblity of GIS application. Geographic information system offers multiple possibilities: cartography and visualization, managing of geographic data, collecting and editing data, and geographic analysis of variety of information in space. For the analytic purpose and public transport cartography (buses and railways), the program of choice is ArcInfo. Data for making thematic maps is taken from the digital atlas of Republic Croatia which contains a variety of data base (counties, roads, settlements, etc). On the basis of statistic data of 2001 census regarding daily circulations and data from coach station and railway stations in Metković and Ploče on traffic routes, drawn are areas of gravitation with marked hub Metković, Ploče and Opuzen. There are shown coach and railway routes between settlements, distance between them, including a number of circulation in counties which are gravitating towards one of already mentioned hubs.
