Cancer statistic in Croatia shows incidence of 24 000 new patients and mortality of 13 000 patients per year. There are 6 oncology centres in Croatia, 3 in Zagreb and one in Split, Rijeka and Osijek. University Hospital for Tumors was founded 1968 and has following departments: Oncologic surgery, Head and neck surgery, Gynecological oncology, Chemotherapy and medical oncology, Radiation oncology, Anesthesiology, Rehabilitation and physical therapy, Clinical cytology, Clinical pathology, Transfusion medicine, Diagnostic and intervention radiology and Pain management. In Croatia 4 Associations gathering oncological patients are active: Club of Laryngectomized patients, CRO-ILCO – club of patients with colostomy and Europa Donna and R.to R.– clubs of women operated on breast. Club of Laryngectomized patients was founded 1974. Its aim is care for people operated and treated on laryngeal cancer. Club is a Member of CEL (European Confederation of Laryngetomized patients). Since 2001 subsidiaries of the Club have been founded in 7 other Croatian cities. There are about 1000 laryngectomized patients in Croatia, and about half of them joined the Club. Club has 150 members in Zagreb, average age 60yrs (32-83). Meetings are being held twice a month with excercises for neck and shoulders muscles and visits to newly operated patients. Club cooperates with other physicians' and nurses' clubs. They have organized VII. European Congress CEL in Crikvenica 2006 and have published booklets “ How to help laryngectomized patients” and “ Physical therapy of persons operated on larynx” . CRO-ILCO – club of patients with colostomy was founded 1983 and since 1992 is a member of IOA (International Ostomy Association). It’ s 3000 members holds meetings once a month during which they give advices about using of stoma, nutrition, hygiene and family realtionships to their members. Club provides them psychological support and help in reintegration in society. Six regional clubs were founded in other Croatian cities. Europa Donna is a club of women operated on breast, non- governmental and non-profit making humanitarian organization, founded in 1993 as a Section of the Croatian League against Cancer. It is a member of EUROPA DONNA European Breast Cancer Coalition. The seat is in Zagreb and activities cover entire Croatia through 47 breast cancer societies. It's membership is composed of women operated on and treated for breast cancer, female health professionals, breast cancer- related organisations and institutions and women wishing to identify with the fight against breast cancer. The Croatian Forum accepts the basic goals of Europa Donna and tries to implement them in our society. It collaborates with University Hospital for Tumors, Croatian Oncologic Society, Croatian Senologic Society, Croatian League against Cancer, Croatian Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine, Croatian Psychosocial Oncology Association and Croatian Association for Hospice/ Palliative Care. The most important projects are Daffodil day (since 1995), Pink ribbon day (since 1999) and Mobile mammography project (since 2002). Club is a partner in National Program for Prevention and Early Detection of Cancer, in media campaigning, motivating women to get mammograms and assisting Program implementation. Reach to Recovery (R.to R.)- Croatian model was Founded in 1993 by 8 women who have had personal experience with breast cancer and have completed training of R.to R Programme. In 1994 volunteers have started to work with patients at University Hospital for Tumors. Today R.to R. has 31 volunteer in 10 major Croatian cities. Volunteers give their time, experience and understanding to patients and help them in recovery ; they do not cover medical issues. Team is also consisted of psychologist, defectologist, psychiatrist, surgical oncologist, physical and rehabilitation medicine specialist and nurse. They participate in various conferences and symposia and collaborate with media. In May 2002. they won UICC Prize for activities in development and implementation of R. to R. Programme.
