Croatian State Heraldry in the 20th Centry – Between Myths and Reality
After the First World War ” Croatian checky shield” has been founded as a common and legal coat of arms for different historical regions of Croatia, set together in 1918 under Serbian dynasty Karađorđević in the newly formed Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. Until the end of the 20th century, this armorial bearing survived even 4 political administrations and a few more analogue modifications in shape, or even in meaning. Each new political regime brought radical changes in dominant social values, attitudes, norms and symbols, providing Croatian coat of arms with a different explanation, or with another myth. The article deals with heraldic modifications of the state coat of arms in the context of relevant political changes
state heraldry; Croatian checky shield; the SCS Kingdom; Banovina Croatia; Independent State of Croatia; Socialist Republic of Croatia
