Application of Terrestrial Laser Scanning in Advanced Construction Survey

We at the Faculty of Geodesy, University of Zagreb (Croatia), recently used terrestrial 3D laser scanning to measure various types of objects, and improved the interoperability between different tools needed to transform point cloud data into usable object formats. The point clouds were successfully used to extract cross-sections and calculate volumes in two long tunnel tubes, which are the largest infrastructure projects in Croatia. The resulting combination of CAD objects and generalized point clouds was then used as input to produce high-quality 4D animations. In addition, the resulting hybrid format will be used by architects and civil engineers to interactively extract desired subsets of spatial data according to their own needs ; we are currently investigating the optimal means of producing such multifaceted deliverables. Another application of laser scanning as an effective method of fast acquisition of spatial data was the modeling of alternative utility routes through the landscape - this case study focuses on the national pipeline. Again, the combination of several data sources was used for 4D animation - a virtual reality based on real spatially referenced data. The presentation will also examine the challenges that such datasets pose to modern geographic information systems, which are usually not suitable for 3D or 3D-with-time applications.
