Crystal growth kinetics and mechanisms
Crystal materials, along with other forms of condensed matter, are fundamental to modern technology. There are many scientific and technical problems in producing crystals of the desired properties. Any particular defective structure in a single crystal or a crucial property of physical-chemical nature, originate from nucleation and growth kinetics and mechanisms, as well as from nucleation and growth conditions, and from processes occurring in a crystal after its formation. All these processes are governed by basic theoretical principles regardless of the chemical nature of the crystal. In order to make possible better control of crystallization mechanisms, the understanding of the processes involved is extremely important. In this chapter an attempt is made to give a brief historical and general survey of mostly theoretical material concerning nucleation and crystal growth. Secondary processes of solid-liquid equilibration are also treated, and the key references to further information and new approaches to the subject are given.
