A new approach to high current pulse electrical stimulators design
The design of electrical stimulators that have to generate short, high current pulses is discussed. Such stimulators are regularly used in transcranial stimulation. The set output current of the stimulator is obtained through programming of a programmable high voltage source according to the predicted value of the biological impedance. The predicted value is obtained by sub-threshold measurement of the bio-impedance and a multidimensional look-up table, which compensates the difference from the measured value and the real value (which is different due to non-linear properties of the electrode-electrolyte interface, skin and internal impedance at high current densities). This method is introduced into the design to overcome the possible damages of the tissue under the electrodes at the electrode-skin interface.
