Reliability of Borg's Scale
The semi-descriptive Borg's estimation scale, which consists of 21 degrees (0 – 20), has been tested on a number of occasions for its metric characteristics. Borg used it for estimations of various physical and mental tasks, such as bicycle ergometer and various mental tests. He found it highly reliable for physical tasks with known input load, but not for mental tasks with unknown input difficulty. One of the aims of a series of investigations was to test the scale reliability by the use of tasks highly saturated with mental component. Fitts Tapping Task which consists of 12 sub-tasks, with the difficulty range from one to six bits, was used. The obtained relationship between the task difficulty (bits) and the task difficulty assessment on Borg’ s scale was linear, i.e. y=0.849+2.316x, where: x = task difficulty (bits), y = task difficulty assessment. Test – retest trials showed the scale reliability coefficients between 0.89 and 0.93. It is argued that this relationship may be used for difficulty assessments of tasks which difficulty is not known at the input. Their difficulty assessments on Borg's scale may be transferred in the equivalents of bits for easier comparisons.
