Effect of T-2 toxin on certain blood parameters, serum enzyme levels in comparison to DNA damage of chicken peripheral blood cells

T-2 toxin is a highly toxic trichothecene mycotoxins occurring naturally in grains and feed. Allowed concentration of this mycotoxin in animal feed in Croatia, as well as in many other countries in the world, is 0.5 mg/kg. Continuous feeding with grains contaminated with this dose may in combination with other immunocompromising factors lead to subacute or chronic disorders that represent greater economical loss in poultry production than acute T-2 toxin toxicosis. The purpose of this study was to evaluate effects of a low those of T-2 toxin on responses on blood parameters and plasma biochemistry in broiler chicken within a period of five days of single dose exposure. Alterations of biochemical data after exposure to T-2 toxin have been reported. In our study there were no alterations in blood parameters (total blood count, hematocrit) in control and treated group of animals. In treated group of animals, activities of alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase have been significantly increased (in comparison to control group) fourth hour and 72nd hour after toxin exposure. Activity of alkaline phosphatase was also significantly increased in treated group eight hour and 120th hour after exposure, while increased activity of lactate dehydrogenase has been detected on 24th and 120th hour after exposure. The results were compared to simultaneously detected DNA damage at corresponding time intervals. Our results clearly indicate changes in enzyme activities after toxin exposure. However, further study in necessary to evaluate effects of various doses of toxin in chicken. It is however valuable help in diagnosing potential cases of mycotoxin exposure.
