Novel high sensitive potentiometric sensor for ethoxylated nonionic surfactants
Ethoxylated nonionic surfactants (EONS) form complexes with a variety of monovalent and divalent cations, alkaline earth metals and transition metals. Most of the analytical methods for determinating the presence of polyethoxylated nonionic surfactants are based on the formation of tetraphenylborate (TPB) salts of pseudocationic complexes of nonionics surfactants with some metal cations. A new sensitive nonionic surfactant sensor has been prepared, based on 1, 3-didecyl-2-methyl-imidazolium-tetraphenylborate ion-exchange complex as a sensing material incorporated into PVC-membrane plasticized with o-NPOE. The sensor exhibited positive linear non-Nernstian response toward different nonionic surfactants and Nernstian response toward tetraphenylborate in barium chloride solution. It has been used as an end-point indicator for potentiometric titration of analytical and technical grade polyethoxylated nonionic surfactants. The interfering effect of some alkaline, alkaline earth, and heavy metal cations, has been demonstrated by displaying their calibration curves compared with that of Triton X-100. The sensor has been applied to the study of the reaction stoichiometry of barium and Triton X-100 pseudoionic complex formation and its reaction with tetraphenylborate. The mechanism of complexing, at a fixed Ba2+ concentration, has been proposed for Triton X-100 concentrations above the stoichiometric concentration. It was also evidenced that the concentration of the formed pseudoionic complex increased with an increase in Ba2+ concentration, at a fixed Triton X-100 concentration, even after the consumption of Triton X-100 as the limiting reactant. These results suggest that the standardization of sodium tetraphenylborate and the determination of polyethoxylated nonionic surfactants (EONS) in real samples must be performed at a specified Ba2+ concentration for each particular EONS investigated.
