Structural optimization of Con-Ro ship superstructure - EU FP6 project DeLIGHT

The overall objective of this paper is to present the optimization process applied to Container-Ro/Ro ship superstructure with deck sandwich modules imbedded in the novel deck supporting structure and preformed through application Case 4B, within EU FP6 project DeLight Transport. The sandwich modules were used for the fixed car decks in the superstructure (above strength deck 6 and between aft end and midship section). The final goal of the new design concept was to maximize savings in production cost and deadweight savings (weight) and also to influence other ship parameters/quality measures (ship height, etc). Based on the Uljanik Shipyard structural concepts, University of Zagreb(UZ) developed full ship 3D FE structural model of a conventionally structured ship with stiffened panel decks and analyses were performed according to DNV rules. Multi-criteria optimization (weight, cost, VCG) of this reference model was performed using MAESTRO software. After the analysis of the reference structural design, the superstructure decks 8-10 were removed and the transverse frames with the novel deck supporting structure including designer’ s preliminary scantlings were introduced. Re-optimization of such sandwich supporting structure was performed in order to compare the benefits of using sandwich panels compared to previously optimized conventional (reference) structure. The detailed comparison between the conventional superstructure design and novel design with incorporated supports for the sandwich modules is presented.
