The Environmental Geochemistry of the Vrana Lake Sediments and Adjacent Soils on Cres Island Croatia
An evaluation of environmental geochemical aspects of Vrana lake in regard to the lake sediments and the surrounding soils was attempted. The possible environmental changes in the local trace element geochemistry of both soils and sediments could be evaluated due to the positive correlation of most elements analyzed in both soils and sediments, with aluminum, implying a direct relationship with the clay minerals. The mean element contents of soils and sediments differ considerably and are much higher in soils (except Ca). The element to Al ratios indicate classify the elements into three general groups, the group of elements that show no difference in ratios in soils and sediments: Ni, Co, Mn, Th, V, Cr, Mg, Ba, Ti, K, and Hg. The elements that are enriched in the sediments are Ca, Cd, and As and in a smaller extent Na. The elements that can be considered as depleted in the clay fraction of the lake sediments are Cu, Pb, Zn, Fe, P and La.
