Severity of acute pancreatitis - is there a relationship with age?

Aim of study: The influence of age on the course of acute pancreatitis (AP) is still a matter of discussion. We evaluated correlation of age with single biochemical markers such as IL-6, sTNFα RI, complex scoring systems (Ranson, APACHE II), and imaging scoring method (CTSI) in AP. We also analyzed if there was a significant difference in age between the groups of patients who developed systemic complications and those who did not. Methods: Two hundred twenty patients (49% male and 51% female), median age 64 in a 4- year period (2004-2008) were included in this study. Serum levels of IL-6 and s TNFα RI measurements were performed by commercially available ELISA kits. CTSI was calculated according to Balthazar's method. APACHE II and Ransom score were calculated according to the references. Results: Age showed no correlation with IL-6 and CTSI (p<0, 001 ; p=0.138), mild correlation to sTNFα RI and Ranson (p<0.001) and moderate correlation to APACHE II (p<0.001) as a markers for predicting severe AP. There's no significant difference in age between groups of patients who developed systemic complication and those who didn't (p= 0.508, t=-0.66). Conclusion: This study demonstrated that severity of acute pancreatitis is not related to age.
