Legal Language in Action: Translation, Terminology, Drafting and Procedural Issues
This book contains 22 contributions by linguists and lawyers (scholars and practitioners) from 14 countries. As indicated by the subtitle, the purpose of the book is not to analyze the characteristics of legal discourse but to focus on the use of language in the mechanism of the law, thus reinforcing the premise that language is the lawyer's most important tool. From the litigator's perspective, «language is a power tool that intertwines with strategy and tactics, allows for manipulation of ideas and has remarkable potential to affect the end result». The book is divided into four parts, each of which deals with an area where language is vital to legal processes: Legal Translation and Court Interpreting, Legal Terminology and Lexicography, Legal Drafting and Transparency, and Litigation and Arbitration.
legal translation; legal terminology; legal drafting; transparency; dispute resolution
