Control of Peacock Spot (Spilocea oleaginea Cast.) in environmental olive production

The fungus Spilocaea oleaginea is the agent causing the peacock spot disease, attacking olive crops exclusively. The Frenchman Castagne described the disease in southern France as early as 1845 under the name of Cycloconium oleaginum (Baldini and Scaramuzzi, 1981). Today it is present in the whole world, in all olive-growing regions, and it is assumed it arrived in Dalmatia via Italy. Experts regard it as one of the most widespread and dangerous fungal diseases of the olive (Dzagania, 1980 ; Mateo-Sagasta, 1978). It has been known in the littoral of our region since the 8th century, and has also been called ospica, šeša and patula (Vrsalović, 1901). For quite some time it caused major damages only in certain areas, particularly those with higher air humidity ; however, today it is safe to say that peacock spot is a significant and serious problem in almost all olive groves of our region. With respect to the scope of fieldwork, each year we note an increase in number of olive groves jeopardized by this disease, in equal proportions in those under both environmental and conventional production. For the purpose of control of peacock spot in olive groves, copper-based preparations are most frequently used. Since the disease affects the fertility of olives under attack, and consecutive occurrence year in year out that we have witnessed recently can cause degradation of trees, we consider it necessary to grant a higher level of significance to this issue in olive production. The objective of this paper is not only to describe symptoms of the disease and provide guidelines for its control, but also to highlight actual options and problems in protection of the olive against peacock spot in environmental production, both from the point of view of legislation and of the specific nature of the olive as an agricultural crop, as well as properties of the fungus and a limited time period during which protection of the olive against peacock spot has to be implemented. Taking into consideration all of the above, there arises a question as to whether it is actually possible to adequately protect olive groves against this disease at all.
