History and present observations in Croatian plant phenology
The first known Croatian phenological observer was Grgur Bučić who started phenological observations on the mid-Adriatic island of Hvar in 1864. Ivan Potočnjak (1878), Professor at the Faculty of Economics and Forestry in Križevci and famous agrometeorologist, wrote the first Croatian agrometeorological text-book Science of climate and air phenomena. In his book, he published the form to be used for phenological observations and emphasised the importance of phenology and of heat impact on the growth and development of plants. The first known organized phenological observations in the continental part of Croatia were at the high schools in Petrinja, Varaždin (1929-1932) and Nova Gradiška (1934-1939). Since 1946, phenological observations have been systematically organized by the Agricultural Institute and later, since 1951, by the Meteorological and Hydrological Service of Croatia (Državni hidrometeorološki zavod, DHMZ). Before that, there were no homogeneous data series and observations were of local character. A new method of data quality control should be developed together with other European countries. This could mean the reorganization of the phenological network and the establishment of a modern observation system to satisfy agrometeorological, climatological and agricultural demand. For the European phenological database, Croatia has submitted data for seven stations, two from the Pannonian flat and two from the mountain area for wild plants, fruits and agricultural crops and three from the Adriatic coast and islands for the Mediterranean plants.
