Changing World of Tourism
Tourism is now such a significant dimension to global social life that it can no longer be conceived of as a temporary aspect of social life practised at self-styled tourist sites and encounters involving tourists away from home. Tourism and culture now plainly overlap and there is no clear frontier between the two and they cannot be kept apart. Economy has turned into an economy of signs, while the development of a post-modern cultural paradigm involves the breaking down of conventional distinction such as high and low culture, art and life, culture and street life, home and abroad, that had kept different social practices within different social and spatial locations. In recent years more emphasis is being given to embodied perspectives on tourism and a new tourism of the body has been emerging. These new directions in tourism research continue to work with and build on the tourist gaze and the semiotics of tourism. Tourism is implicated in the society of the commodity and the society of the spectacle, and is a social and cultural construct, which is subject to a constant flux of production, consumption, reproduction, representation, commodification and transformation
