Bending resistance of aluminium foam after age hardening
Aluminium foams were produced by means of foaming of the powder compacted precursor into mold. The precursor was hot extruded from the precompacted mixture of aluminium alloy powder AlMg1Si0.6 and powdered foaming agent (0.4 wt.% TiH2). The two groups of testing samples have been prepared. The first one was cooled from the foaming temperature in water and the second one in air. The samples cooled in air have been normally homogenized and artificially (warm) aged and the samples cooled in water have only been warm aged. Three point bending test was carried out and the maximum bending load and deflection have been determined and compared with each other and also with “ as foamed” condition. Additionally, the microhardness and Charpy impact energy have been tested. The testing confirms the previous results that the ageing significantly increases the mechanical properties, in this case hardness and bending resistance. The samples, which were cooled in water and only warm aged, gave the same effects as by conventional treatment - homogenisation and warm ageing.
