Production of biogas from chicken manure

Correct organic manure management can reduce environment pollution and at the same time produce energy and profit. The aim of this research was to determine potential for biogas production from chicken manure. Chicken manure contains 23% to 45% of dry matter. Due to high dry matter share in chicken manure and its thick consistency, biogas release during fermentation is difficult and the degree of organic mass utilization is lower due to weaker microorganism mobility. For this reason it is necessary to reduce dry matter concentration to optimal share of 6% to 15%. Research was conducted with diluted chicken manure which was reduced to 15% of dry matter, and the results were compared with piggish manure which was conditioned to 15% of dry matter. Average amount of produced biogas from 1 ml of substrate was 32.92 ml for chicken manure and 18.82 ml for piggish manure. Beside the evident difference in amount of produced biogas, statistically significant differences were determined in methane concentration (p=0.038) between chicken and piggish manure. Conversion of biogas to electric power and thermal energy with cogeneration systems brings extra profit, and excess thermal energy can be used in one’ s own technological production processes on the farm. Chicken manure management would also reduce gas emission to atmosphere.
