Coursebook Analysis: A comparison of two second-grade coursebooks
The aim of the thesis was to conduct a comparative analysis of two coursebooks for the second grade of primary school. The author has chosen the two most used in Croatian schools for this purpose - Building Blocks 2 and Dip in 2. The intention was to reveal the differences and similarities as well as potential weak/strong points in some of their elements. In the introduction, the author points out how important coursebooks and the process of their selection are for the teaching process. She also comments on the role of educational institutions in connection to it. The main part of the thesis starts by defining the notions related to the examination of teaching materials followed by a short review of evaluation procedures and tools. After that, the central section deals with the analysis of the particular coursebooks: the analysis of language items - first grammar, then vocabulary. and a comment on the importance of recycling and the different treatment of recycling in the two coursebooks. The main part ends with the analysis of the two Teacher’ s Books. The author concludes that the coursebooks under scrutiny have improved in comparison to their previous editions and expect their continuous development in the future. Also, the importance of competent coursebook evaluation and selection by teachers is emphasized and the role it plays for quality teaching in the FL classroom.
