Simulation of Soot and NOx formation in Large Marine Engines
The ship is the cheapest of all the transport means. Among all the ship propulsion systems, the large, two stroke engine is the most effective one. However, fuel prices and pollution problems are pushing engine development further. Numerical simulations are one of the tools that allow us this development. In the present work a 3D numerical model of a large marine engine was developed with the computational fluid dynamics software OpenFOAM. The Fusco soot model has been implemented and the Zeldovich model was used to calculate NOx formation. The soot model has been validated on the experimental results of the Sandia Engine Combustion Network combustion vessel. It was found that the model results show very good agreement for what concerns the oxygen concentration influence on soot formation. However, poor agreement was found for what concerns the pressure influence. The model was improved to take account of pressure influence. After the model tuning on the constant volume chamber, the large marine engine cylinder model has been built and soot and NOx formation were evaluated.
