Quantification of intraocular interferon-gamma and IgG in cataract and diabetes
We measured intraocular IgG, oligoclonal IgG, albumin and IFN-g in aqueous humor of patients with diabetes and retinopathy. The controls were the patients with uncomplicated senile cataract. IgG index and Reiber's numerical model were used for the evaluation of intraocular IgG transfer and synthesys. The data were compared to the evaluation of immunochemically detected oligoclonal aqueous IgG and IFN-g. Intraocular production of the IgG was detected in diabetic patients since IgG index values were increased in some diabetic groups (especially those with type I diabetes and retinopathy). The comparison of numerical methods and clonal IgG detection suggested that intraocular IgG in diabetes was predominately polyclonal. IFN-g was pathological in serum and aqueous humor of the patients with type I diabetes and to the lesser extent in the type II diabetes group. The results confirm that the combination of immunochemical and numerical methods may contribute to the evaluation of the pathologic intraocular immune response in diabetes.
