Optimization of CTI Electronics Optical Joystick Performance
In order to increase linearity of response of the tested optical joystick we have designed, deployed and tested a set of patterns intended for application on the mirror surfaces of the joystick. Using the simulation program, built especially for this study, we have understood that a linear response wider than +-15 degrees can only be obtained if the viewing spots of two fibers are made closer. By better optimization of the striped pattern and fiber viewing angle using specially written CAD-CAM program the response function could be made linear in the whole range of  20 deg of the joystick lever movement. If necessary, a specified (width) plateau could also be added in the middle of the range. In order to increase the efficiency of light collection, in the final design we strongly recommend use of the FLAT mirror with optimum stripes drawn on it.
