The Changes in the Iconographic Representation of St Sebastian in the Late Middle Ages and the Renaissance

Although paintings and sculptures presenting St Sebastian were relatively often created during the early medieval period, the paintings presenting that saint became far more frequent during the Late Middle Ages and Renaissance. In the early Middle Ages two stylistic and iconographic types of presentation of St Sebastian coexisted, that of the middle aged bearded man and a strong young man. But, from the late fourteenth and beginning of the fifteenth century the shift happened symbolized by the domination of presentation of young and bodily strong man in the sacral painting across the Europe. The cause for that shift was in the desire of painters and ordering parties to get saintly protector whose visual expression underlines his capability to fight the plague. In Dalmatia St Sebastian’ s visual expression as young and strong knight had also another function, that is to give the believe to Christians that they have invincible heavenly protector from Ottomans.
