Stabilization of gold nanoparticles with functionalized nitrosobenzenes
Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) stabilized with various capping agents and with a diameter less then 10 nm have generated huge interest over the past decade due to their high potential applications in areas such as nanoelectronics, nonlinear optics, catalysis, sensors and biolabeling. Practical application of AuNPs is possible only if precise control of the nanoparticles size and chemical functionality is achieved. AuNPs are usually stabilized with sulfur-containing organic compounds that form very stable Au-S bond. In this work we present the synthesis and characterization of gold nanoparticles stabilized with functionalized nitrosobenzenes. The majority of nitrosobenzenes exist as dimers (azodioxides) in the solid state and as monomers in the solution. Nitrosobenzene dimerization reaction could be used for construction of interesting supramolecular system of AuNPs linked through azodioxides (ON=NO) bonds. It is well known that one of the biggest challenge in the field of nanoelectronics, with AuNPs as potential single electron transistors, is to find suitable way to link nanoparticles into complicated logic gates and circuits. Beside that, it was previously shown that nitrosobenzenes exhibit photochromic and thermochromic behavior in the solid state which also offers many possibilities for their potential application. AuNPs capped with functionalized nitrosobenzenes were synthesized following a two-phase modified Brust-Schiffrin method. Nanoparticles thus obtained were characterized by FTIR spectroscopy, UV/VIS spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). As it was observed by FTIR spectroscopy, isolated AuNPs are indeed stabilized with dimeric nitrosobenzenes which suggest interlinking of metal cores through ON=NO bonds. Average particle diameter observed by TEM is about 5 nm.
