The appearance of multinucleated giant cells after a whole body microwave irradiation of rats
The influence of non-ionising radiation on quantity and functionality of free lung cell population was investigated. Wistar rats were preinstilled with biologically inert microspheres and exposed to 2450 MHz microwaves. Cell response was followed quantitatively and qualitatively. Cell count retrieved by lung lavage diminished, whereas multinucleated cells were significantly elevated in treated animals. The increase in the nuclei number per cell was time and dose dependent. These findings may be a consequence of macrophage fusion or engulfement of effete cells by other macrophages that was accelerated by irradiation. Multinucleation of macrophages was a sensitive and persistent morphological indicator of pulmonary stress.
