The source model of VBR video based on modulated TES process

The transmission network for video services is expected to be an ATM network because of its ability to support different delay and bit rate requirements, i.e. quality of service (QoS) parameters. ATM technology is based on statistical multiplexing and the QoS parameters can be guaranteed only statistically. Thus it is important to understand the nature of a particular connection before it is accepted for the transport through the network. The nature of compressed video signal is not well understood and numerous models of compressed video are proposed in literature. MPEG video, as one of the most frequently used encoding standards, consists of I, P, and B frame types. While a strong correlation among the frames of the same type is recognized, a correlation among the frames of different nature is not. Accordingly, most proposed models start from different stochastic processes for different frame types. The model of an MPEG video source is obtained by combining the outcomes of I, P, and B processes according to a given group of pictures (GoP) pattern. This paper demonstrates that the frames of different types are highly correlated and present a novel model for MPEG video source. The model is based on characteristics of correlated traffic. Instead of using three independent stochastic processes, a single process is used and the outcomes for different frame types are obtained by means of transformations.
