An Extended Error Control Technique for Wireless ATM Channel
The Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) employs header error control in order to protect cell integrity. However, wireless ATM systems require a more powerful error control techniques to offer acceptable cell loss ratio (CLR) and bit error rate (BER) performance. This paper propose an architecture which integrates intra cell interleaving and FEC code as protection of cell header and payload and extended go-back-N (EGBN) ARQ as a correction mode on Wireless ATM layer. Wireless channel is characterized by burst errors that cause decoding errors. Correlation of bits at the output of decoder can be exploited as information about channel behavior. EGBN-ARQ estimates the channel state and adaptively switches its operation mode in a channel where error rates vary slowly. The channel is modeled as Gilbert-Elliot (GE) channel which is suitable for describing bursty channels.
