Off-site Medical Response in Nuclear Emergencies Organised by Clinical Hospital Centre Zagreb, Croatia
Throughout more than fifteen years of contracted service to the NPP Krsko (now in the Republic of Slovenia, but only 20 miles from Zagreb), the Emergency Medical Centre for Radiation Medicine and Protection at the Clinical Hospital Centre Zagreb developed to a modem centre, unique in this part of Europe. It is well equipped with special and dedicated instrumentation and a small, especially built hospital separation ward for possible worst case patients. There are emergency plans and vvritten procedures for treatment of persons accidentally injured in a nuclear power plant or similar accident. The qualified teams (on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week) organise frequent exercises and, at least, once per year a joint exercise with the appropriate personnel of the NPP and their local Medical Centre. In order to raise the knowledge of medical doctors in radiation protection and emergency actions, in collaboration with the Medical School of the University of Zagreb, Specialised Postgraduate Courses were initiated. Also, under the auspices of the IAEA, the Centre organized two Training Courses on Medical Emergencies in Radiation Accidents.
