Extraction and separation of copper(II) from zinc(II) by 4-pyridine derivatives

The extraction of copper(II) from aqueous hydrochloric and nitric acid solution by 3-hydroxy-2-methyl-1-phenyl-4-pyridone (HX) nad 3-hydroxy-2-methyl-1-(4-tolyl)-4-pyridone (HY) dissolved in chloroform is described. At pH>3, copper(II) is quantitatively extracted while at pH<1 it practically all remains in the aqueous phase. Zinc(II) cannot be extracted from 10-4 M to 3M HCl or HNO3 by either HX or HY. On the basis of these differences, a rapid and simple method for separation of copper from zinc was designed. The composition of the extracted copper(II) species (CuX2 and CuY2) was determined radiometrically, and by characterization of the crystalline compounds isolated.
