Implication of preoperative status on postoperative outcome for children with cochlear implants

The benefits of cochlear implantation on speech and hearing rehabilitation of deaf children are well known. It is also well known that final outcomes may vary from open speech understanding and ability to conversate over the telephone to only sound awareness and quality of life improvement. Although preoperative assessments can to a certain degree predict the postoperative auditory functioning, sometimes the outcome surpasses prediction With broadening of preoperative criteria children with additional difficulties are also considered as candidates for cochlear implantation but an additional counseling of families is necessary. During the last 12 years at Polyclinic SUVAG, over 270 with cochlear implants children have been included in rehabilitation and/or speech processor mappings. This group largely varies according to age at implantation, preoperative listening and speech skills, presence of additional difficulties, duration and frequency of rehabilitation. The presentation evaluates auditory performance of children fitted with cochlear implantsI, implanted at the age between 14 and 36 months, regarding their preoperative status. Postoperative auditory performance is assessed using pure tone and speech audiometry and EARS battery test, consisting of sound perception to closed- and open-set words and sentences tests. Speech intelligibility is evaluated by SIR scale. Results are followed up from 8 months to 6 years postoperatively.
