Traces of evidence for Badenian local sea level changes in proximal area of the North Croatian Basin

The study of the Badenian marine sediments from Vrhovčak section has led to several surprising results. Vrhovčak section is located in the south‐ western margin of the North Croatian Basin in the area of Mt. Samoborska gora, and the total thickness of investigated section is four meters. Marine sediments of Badenian age at the base and upper parts of the section have been documented with assemblages of organic‐ walled phytoplankton: Achomosphaera sp, Spiniferites sp., Operculodinium sp. and Polysphaeridium sp. ; foraminifers: Ammonia viennensis and Nonion commune, mollusks: Parvilucina dentata, Corbula (Varicorbula) gibba (Olivi) and Euspira catena helicina ; ostracods: Cytheridea acuminata Bosquet, Cytheridea cf. arcuata Jiriček, Olimfalunia plicatula (Reuss), Olimfalunia cf. spinulosa (Reuss) Olimfalunia sp., Aurila punctata (Reuss), Aurila angulata (Reuss), Hermanites haindigeri (Reuss), Loxoconcha punctatella (Reuss), and Phlyctenophora cf. affinis (Schneider). In the central part of the section Vrhovčak appear layers of coal and freshwater sediments. In the freshwater sediment (total thickness 0, 2 m) it has been determined fresh water ostracods: Vastenula cylindrica (Strauss), Eucypris? sp., Paralimnocythere rostrata (Straub) mixed with marine microfauna. In the layers of freshwater sediments, and also in the coal, it has been determined rich and diverse pollen assemblage (Bisaccites div. sp., Arecipites sp., Caryapollenites simplex (Potonie) Raatz ex Potonie, Juglanspollenites sp., Pterocaryapollenites stellatus (Potonie) Thiergart, Platycaryapollenites mioacaenicus Nagy, Momipites punctatus (Potonie) Nagy, Engelhardtioidites microcoryphaeus (Potonie) Thomson et Thiergart ex. Potonie, Myricapollenites sp., Ulmipollenites sp., Carpinipites carpinoides (Pflug) Nagy, Alnipollenites verus (Potonié) Potonié, Intratriporopollenites cordataeformis (Wolff) Mai, Tricolporopollenites microreticulatus Pflug & Thomson, Rhoipites pseudocingulum (Potonié) Potonié, and Ericipites callidus (Potonié) Krutzsch.
