Characterisation of Ti valence state in FeTiO3 by analysis of high-resolution Ti Kb x-ray spectra induced by the proton impact
FeTiO3 is well known mineral in which the oxidation state of Fe is FeII. It has been widely assumed that the oxidation state of titanium in FeTiO3 is TiIV, the same as in TiO2. However, in their recent publication Fukushima et al. [1] reported that the valence state of titanium in FeTiO3 is partially TiIII, with a possibility of being the mixed state of TiIV and TiIII. Their findings were based on measured high-resolution Ka and La X-ray spectra of titanium and Ka X-ray spectra of oxygen in several titanium compounds, including FeTiO3. Since valence orbitals do not participate in titanium Ka transitions, but they do in titanium Kb band transitions, we expect them to be more sensitive on the chemical environment of titanium atoms. Therefore in the present work we measured complementary high-resolution titanium Kb X-ray spectra induced by the proton impact on metallic titanium and its several compounds, including FeTiO3. For quantitative analysis purposes, the main spectral line (Kb1, 3) and second order radiative contributions (Kb2, 5, Kb', Kb'', and Kb''') in measured spectra have been fitted with pseudo-Voight profiles. Intensities and energies of secondary contributions relative to Kb1, 3 x-ray line have been extracted and correlated with chemical state of titanium in corresponding compounds. The results of the analysis have been discussed. Although they do not lead straightforward to declarative statement on titanium oxidation state, they are useful as supplement to results obtainable by other methods. [1] S. Fukushima, T. Kimura, K.
