Neurodynamics of face processing
Magnetoencephalograpic (MEG), electroencephalograpic (EEG) measurements and spatio-temporal neuromagnetic source localization were used to investigate dynam- ics of cortical pathways involved in face processing. MEG studies presented in this thesis concentrated on the early cortical processing of faces and demonstrated dif- ferences in responses to face and object (ower) stimuli already about 100 ms after stimulus onset in the occipital cortex. Nonlinearity of the MEG responses was larger for face and object than for meaningless control stimuli. MEG/EEG responses around 100 ms were also distinct for happy vs. neutral, upright vs. in- verted, and standard vs. deviant vs. target faces presented in an oddball paradigm, suggesting an early stage in face processing. Di¤erences in locations and dynamics of the identi ed sources for deviants and targets at later latencies are likely to represent neuronal correlates of detection of a change in the visual stimulus.
