Interesting cases of tumors in cattle treated during extramural teching in Croatia
The word tumour directly translated from the Latin language means swelling. Generally spoken in the medical terminology swellings such as haematoma, abscess, phlegmone and hernia are often described as tumours. But in the most of the cases when the tumour is mentioned it is referring to neoplasm, which could be benign or malignant. Although the most frequently referred tumours in cattle such as bovine lymphosarcoma and tumours of the urinary bladder are generally diagnosed in the slaughter-houses, we estimate that various forms of the papillomas are the most frequent external neoplasm observed in cattle. Most of the cases could be treated and successfully cured within the field conditions. In our case investigation we described a rare case of congenital melanoma in 3 month bull calf, which was operated in the owners stable, and patient gained full recovery, without any signs of recidivism changes, till the age of 13 months. The melanoma was positioned on the very Achilles tendon of the right hindlimb, successfully removed with the administration of the regional anaesthesia of n. tibialis combined with the infiltration anaesthesia of lateral tarsal region. Macroscopical and histological findings were done. We estimated that even in the poor field operating conditions such neoplasm can be operated and the patient’ s health could be well preserved.
