Foveated Vision and Video Quality Evaluation
The using of characteristics of the human visual system (HVS) can significantly improve the efficiency of video coding process. Enhanced coding processes take into account the high spatial variability of HVS in sampling, coding and understanding of visual information. The highest visual sensitivity is at the point of fixation and decreases rapidly with distance from that point. Foveated image and video coding systems use the advantage of this phenomenon and therefore achieve increased compression efficiency. The basic idea used in such systems is to remove considerable high-frequency information redundancy from the regions away from the fixation point without significant loss of the reconstructed image or video quality. In this paper we analyze the usage of some foveated techniques in video quality evaluation process. The quality measures obtained by objective quality metrics are compared with the results obtained by subjective tests.
