Bandwidth Allocation for VBR Video in High-speed Networks: Digital Filtering Approach

Understanding of queue response to input spectrum will provide us a great deal of knowledge to develop advanced network traffic control and measure theories and to introduce effective network resource allocation policies. Taking average over a sufficiently long time interval, one will get two input vectors: power spectrum and phase spectrum. It is possible to develop simple link capacity allocation schemes based on these two input spectral vectors. The same concept can be applied to routing and call admission policies. For instance, one can find the link capacity required by a new call from its given input spectrum. And the final issue is the network-wide traffic analysis. So far most multimedia traffic queueing analyses have emphasized performance studies of a single separate link or switch node. The analytical bottleneck for such an extension is how to characterize the intertraffic process at intermediate node. Any attempt to obtain a direct solution of interconnected multimedia traffic queues is likely to fail due to the complexity of its analysis. The possible solution is to break that bottleneck in spectral domain. It is becoming obvious that DSP techniques are no more limited to the analog signals at the input of the network, but they enter into the network and are quite useful in the traffic flow control, too.
