Intelligent system in the function of detecting free parking locations in urban areas
One way to resolve the problem of constant cruising of cars in search for free parking place is the implementation of Parking Directional System (PDS) as an essential element of Automatic Traffic Control System (ATCS) into a global traffic system of urban areas. PDS is concieved and designed as a sub-system consisting of a series of variable traffic signals which in conjunction with ATCS (by means of detectors-magnetic loops) produces a reliable prognostic information on the availability of free parking spaces. PDS is an optimized system of variable traffic signals which direct the driver to certain parking location (parking area, garage etc), with minimal travelling time in search of free parking spaces. PDS's main goal is to provide in-time information and to direct the driver towards free parking locations using the shortest way and roads offering the best efficiency at the time. This work describes the implementation of PDS in the City of Rijeka, analysing main elements of the system, as well as the results which are expected in relation to the optimisation of traffic flow through the city center.
