How to treat the proper name in an encyclopaedic dictionary.
Onomastic materials are not always considered to be an obligatory component of encyclopaedic dictionaries. It is usually up to the editor to decide whether such materials will be included into a dictionary and to what extent. The decision depends both on specific needs of potential dictionary users and on the basic lexicographic principles. The Croatian Encyclopedic Dictionary is the first dictionary of this kind in the long and rich Croatian lexicographic tradition. It is conceived as descriptive rather than normative ; as a result, its corpus exceeds by far the basic lexicographic corpus of standard Croatian. The decision to include extensive onomastic materials into the encyclopaedic dictionary has resulted in the inclusion of a number of dialectal and regional forms, as well as words which are not productive in standard Croatian any longer. They include primarily many non-transparent geographical terms which have left a permanent trace in toponymy, as well as numerous Romance, Turkish, German and Hungarian loanwords which were at least onomastically productive at the time when Croatian family names were established. The paper will present the way in which onomastic materials have been included and elaborated in the Croatian Encyclopaedic Dictionary.
