Genetic variations of Ca, Mg, Zn and Mn status in seed-maize grown on acid soils.
Ten parents of seed-maize (inbred lines: L1=Bc706-9, L2=Bc273 ; L3=Bc473E-5 ; L4=Bc265-1 ; L5=Bc707-1 ; L6=Bc31002 ; L7=Bc837-1 ; L8=Bc24W ; L9=Bc742 and L10=Bc741-23) were grown on Sasinovec (Zagreb County, Croatia) acid soil (pH 1nKCl = 3.85) for the 2001 growing season (four replicates ; basic plot 14.0 m2). The ear-leaf was taken at flowering. The total leaf-calcium, -magnesium, -zinc and - manganese was measured by the ICP-AES. In our study considerable hereditary influences on nutritional status of maize were found. Differences in leaf composition (on dry matter basis) among the genotypes were in the range from 0.413 to 0.777% Ca, from 0.082 to 0.212% Mg, from 25.2 to 57.1 mg Zn kg-1 and from 147 to 312 mg Mn kg-1. The low leaf-Ca was found in three genotypes (L4, L5 and L8: mean 0.471% Ca) and high leaf-Ca in three genotypes (L1, L6 and L10: mean 0.698% Ca). Low leaf-Mg was found in two genotypes (L3 and L4: mean 0.089% Mg) and high leaf-Mg in L5 and L6 (mean 0.185% Mg). Three genotypes had low leaf-Zn (L1, L2 and L3: mean 28.4 mg Zn kg-1) and in four genotypes (L4, L5, L6 and L9) it was considerably higher (mean 47.1 mg Zn kg-1). Four genotypes (L1, L4, L7 and L9) had considerably lower leaf-Mn (mean 186 mg Mn kg-1) compared to L3, L5, L6 and L9 (mean 289 mg Mn kg-1).
